Musée d'Orsay
The former train station and its great clock.
The story of the place
The Paris–Orléans railway company wanted a station right in the centre of town for the 1900 Exposition Universelle: Victor Laloux gave it a stone façade concealing a metal frame, and monumental clocks. But its platforms, too short for modern trains, pushed it out of mainline traffic as early as 1939. Saved from demolition and listed as a historic monument in 1978, it reopened on 9 December 1986 as a museum devoted to the arts from 1848 to 1914.
