The story of the place

It all began with an abbey: in 558 the Merovingian king Childebert I had a basilica built here, in the meadows outside Paris, and bishop Germain dedicated it. Sacked by the Norsemen in the 9th century then raised again, the church has kept a Romanesque bell tower that ranks among the oldest in the city. The quarter took on its second face at the end of the 19th century with the Flore and Deux Magots cafés, then after the Liberation, when Sartre, Beauvoir, Boris Vian and the jazz cellars made it the home of existentialism.
