Avenue de Camoëns
The Instagrammers' staircase + lamppost + Eiffel Tower spot.
The story of the place
Cut through in 1904 across former estates of the counts Armand and de La Rochefoucauld-Bayers, this 115-metre street is one of the shortest avenues in Paris. It bears the name of Luís de Camões, the sixteenth-century Portuguese poet. Since the ground drops some ten metres toward boulevard Delessert, it ends as a dead end for cars: a monumental double-flight staircase takes over, and a monument to the poet, sculpted by Clara Menerès, has stood at its foot since 1987.
