The story of the place

Built between 1903 and 1905 to the designs of engineer Louis Biette, with decoration by the architect Jean-Camille Formigé, it replaced a footbridge from the 1878 World's Fair. Its distinctive feature is its two levels: a roadway below, and above it a viaduct carrying metro line 6, resting on the Île aux Cygnes. Known as the viaduc de Passy, it was renamed on 18 June 1949 for the battle of Bir Hakeim, fought in Libya by the Free French in 1942. Cinema has filmed it, from Last Tango in Paris to Inception.
