The story of the place

The place takes its name from the Battle of Trocadero, a Spanish fort guarding Cádiz that French troops captured in 1823. The hill of Chaillot first carried the Palais du Trocadéro, built for the 1878 World's Fair and replaced, for the 1937 exposition, by the Palais de Chaillot designed by Jacques Carlu, Louis-Hippolyte Boileau and Léon Azéma. Its architects opened a central esplanade aligned with the Eiffel Tower. It was inside that palace that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, on 10 December 1948.
