Canal Saint-Martin
Locks, green footbridges and tree reflections.
The story of the place
Paris lacked clean water: an 1802 law, pushed through by Bonaparte, launched a canal fed by the river Ourcq to supply the city and keep epidemics at bay. Wars delayed the work; Charles X finally inaugurated it on 4 November 1825. Four and a half kilometres, nine locks, barges loaded with grain and building materials. Under Napoleon III, Haussmann vaulted it over between Bastille and République to create boulevard Richard-Lenoir. It is here that Eugène Dabit, son of hotel keepers on quai de Jemmapes, set his novel Hôtel du Nord.
