The story of the place

The Belleville hill was long covered in vines: it produced guinguet, a sharp wine that a widespread etymology places at the origin of the word guinguette. In the nineteenth century gypsum quarries opened here, the village was annexed to Paris in 1860 and the district declined. The park was created in 1988 on those rehabilitated slopes, designed by the architect François Debulois. Its terrace, 108 metres above sea level, opens a wide panorama over Paris; a few vine stocks still recall the hill's winemaking past.
