Square du Vert-Galant
The tip of Île de la Cité, right at Seine level.
The story of the place
At the western tip of the Île de la Cité, the square occupies former islets joined to the island during the building of the Pont Neuf, whose first stone was laid in 1578 by Henri III and whose works were completed in 1607 under Henri IV. The tip became a municipal garden in 1884 and keeps the king's nickname, “le Vert-Galant”, earned by his love affairs. Seven metres below the island's present level, it retains its original height and floods when the Seine rises.
