The story of the place

Work began in 1163 on the Île de la Cité, at the initiative of Bishop Maurice de Sully, and stretched over nearly two centuries: Notre-Dame is among the first great Gothic buildings. Neglected after the Revolution, it owes much to Victor Hugo's novel, published in 1831, which stirred public opinion and paved the way for the restoration led by Viollet-le-Duc. The fire of 15 April 2019 destroyed the spire and the timber roof; the cathedral reopened to the public in December 2024.
