The story of the place

A widow of Henri IV and regent of France, Marie de Médicis had little love for the Louvre. In 1612 she bought the mansion of the Duke of Piney-Luxembourg — which gave the place its name — and had Salomon de Brosse build her an Italian-style palace inspired by the Pitti of her Florentine childhood; the garden echoes Boboli. She enjoyed it little: exiled in 1631, she left France never to return and died in Cologne in 1642. Since 1799 the palace has housed a parliamentary assembly; today that is the Senate, which manages the garden.
