Rue Mouffetard
One of the oldest streets in Paris, cobblestones and leaning façades.
The story of the place
La Mouffe follows the line of a road opened under the late Roman Empire, which ran down the Left Bank from the Île de la Cité towards the south. Its name, recorded in various spellings from the Middle Ages onwards, is thought to come from the place called Mont-Cétard; others have read into it an allusion to the quarter's bad smells. The right to hold a market here was granted in the 14th century, and people still do their shopping on the street today. It has kept its winding line, its cobbles and its 17th- and 18th-century houses.
