La Maison Rose — rue de l'Abreuvoir
The Montmartre postcard.
The story of the place
On the corner of rue de l'Abreuvoir — an old path that led to the watering trough of the village of Montmartre — the house probably already stood before 1850. Around 1905 it became the property of the Catalan painter Ramon Pichot and of Laure Germaine Gargallo, a former model of Picasso. Legend has it that she painted the front pink on returning from a stay in Catalonia; the restaurant, opened in 1908, became a haunt of the Bateau-Lavoir artists. Many painters have portrayed it, from Élisée Maclet to Maurice Utrillo.
