Sacré-Cœur
The white basilica with all of Paris at its feet.
The story of the place
The basilica was born of a defeat. After the war of 1870, Parisian Catholics drew up a “national vow”: to raise a sanctuary to the Sacred Heart to atone for the country's misfortunes. Parliament declared it a work of public interest in 1873, the first stone was laid on the hill in 1875, and Paul Abadie drew this Romano-Byzantine silhouette inspired by Hagia Sophia and St Mark's. Consecrated in 1919, it owes its whiteness to Château-Landon stone, which whitens on contact with rain.
