Moulin Rouge
Pigalle's illuminated red windmill.
The story of the place
Opened on 6 October 1889 by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, the Moulin Rouge was a dance hall conceived as a stage set: a mock windmill at the foot of the Montmartre hill, in the Paris of the World's Fair and the brand-new Eiffel Tower. People came for the French cancan and its dancers, La Goulue foremost among them. In 1891 Zidler commissioned a poster from Toulouse-Lautrec: it made painter and cabaret famous overnight. Fire destroyed it in February 1915; rebuilt, it came back to life in the Roaring Twenties.
