The story of the place

The square was Henri IV's own project: on the cleared ground of the former Hôtel des Tournelles, the king had the first royal square of Paris built between 1605 and 1612. Assassinated in 1610, he never saw its opening, marked in April 1612 by a carrousel held for the betrothals of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. Thirty-six brick-and-stone pavilions, all of the same height except the King's and the Queen's, frame the garden. It was renamed place des Vosges in 1800; Victor Hugo lived here.
