Butte-aux-Cailles
A village within the city: alleys, street art, little houses.
The story of the place
The hill owes its name to Pierre Caille, who bought this vine-covered slope above the Bièvre in 1543. Long a village of mills, then of tanners and dyers who lived off the river, it was annexed to Paris in 1860. In May 1871 the Communard fédérés fought one of the last battles of the Commune here. Below runs the water of an artesian well sunk nearly 600 metres beneath the hill; it feeds the swimming pool built by Louis Bonnier and opened in 1924. The quarter has kept its low houses and village lanes.
