The story of the place

Montsouris is one of the great parks Haussmann wanted, alongside the Buttes-Chaumont. The engineer Adolphe Alphand laid it out over disused quarries that first had to be shored up; work began in 1867. Opened in 1869, it was not finished until 1878. Its lake sits in a former open-cast quarry and was at first fed by the Arcueil aqueduct; it drained in 1878, an episode that still feeds a stubborn legend. The Palais du Bardo, a pavilion from the 1867 World's Fair, was re-erected here and burned down in 1991.
